The province of Arezzo, the easternmost province in Tuscany, is home to a wealth of genuinely fascinating attractions. Once you’ve explored the historic centre, head north: just a few kilometres past the charming village of Subbiano, you’ll find yourself at the gates of the Casentino, a valley straddling the provinces of Arezzo, Florence and Forlì-Cesena, where art and culture blend seamlessly with unspoilt natural scenery. This is where you’ll find the Casentino Forests National Park, which together with the Monte Falterona and Campigna areas forms one vast protected natural area that also extends into Emilia-Romagna.
To the east of Arezzo lies a second valley, equally significant to the area’s character: the Valdarno, right on the border with Florence province. Here, Florentine influence is particularly strong, evident even in the local accent. Worth visiting are the settlements of Terranuova Bracciolini, Loro Ciuffenna and Castelfranco di Sopra, as well as the town of Montevarchi, an excellent base for exploring the area.
South and west of Arezzo, in the heart of Italy on the border with Umbria, you’ll find two beautiful valleys: the Valle del Sovara and the Valdichiana. When exploring the first, don’t miss the villages of Anghiari and Sansepolcro, whilst in the latter, among its stunning landscapes and gastronomic delights, be sure to visit Cortona, as well as Foiano della Chiana, Lucignano, Castiglion Fiorentino and Monte San Savino.
