Florence’s international airport (IATA code: FLR) is located just a few kilometres from the city centre, in a very convenient position with respect to the city’s main transport links. Arriving in Florence by air allows you to cut travel times, and thanks to the recent expansion of the terminal, there are now many airlines and destinations served by both major carriers and budget airlines.
Also known as Florence Peretola airport, named after the suburb where it is located, Florence airport is officially named after Amerigo Vespucci. The airport has recorded consistent growth and record passenger numbers in recent years, regularly exceeding 3 million annual passengers, whilst remaining Tuscany’s second busiest airport after Pisa international airport.
Once you land in Florence, you can head straight to the city centre, or set off on a Tuscany tour. There are plenty of options available: car, taxi, tram or bus.
To get to Florence city centre once you’ve landed, the by far most economical and convenient option is the tram. The airport is the terminus for the T2 line, which runs all the way to Santa Maria Novella station, practically in the city centre. Tickets are purchased directly from the automatic machines at the stop, and the journey takes approximately 20–30 minutes. A single ticket currently costs €1.50.
During its journey, the T2 tram line stops at a series of strategic points in the city, including Viale Guidoni, Via di Novoli, Viale Redi, Viale Belfiore and Via Alamanni. At Santa Maria Novella station you can change lines, boarding the T1 line heading north (Careggi hospital) or south (towards Scandicci).
As an alternative to the tram, the Volainbus shuttle service operates from Florence airport, run by BusItalia-Sita Nord, which goes directly to Santa Maria Novella station with no intermediate stops in approximately 20 minutes. Services depart every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 00:30, for a total of 35 daily trips in both directions. Free Wi-Fi and ample luggage space are available on board.
A single ticket costs €6.00; a return ticket costs €10.00. Tickets can be purchased on board, at the Giunti bookshop in the airport arrivals area, or at the BusItalia-Sita Nord ticket office near Santa Maria Novella station.
The most convenient option for getting from the airport to your hotel is the taxi. You’ll find them waiting for you outside the terminal exit, available 24 hours a day, and ready to take you wherever you need to go. Florence taxis charge fixed fares: for the airport-to-centre journey, the standard daytime weekday fare is approximately €22–24.70, with supplements for late-night trips (after 22:00) or on public holidays, when the fare rises to approximately €25–30. The airport-to-centre journey takes approximately 15–20 minutes, mainly because taxis are authorised to use priority lanes and travel within ZTL (traffic-restricted zones).
An alternative to TAXIs is to book in advance a private transfer to or from Florence Airport airport. A driver will pick you up at the airport arrivals (thus avoiding taxi queues), at your hotel or wherever you prefer, to take you to the desired address.
It is the best solution if you do not want to waste time, do not want to use public transport, have a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. To book a private transfer to or from Florence Airport airport visit this site.

Just outside the airport area is the CAP Autolinee stop, where the regional bus to Prato departs, with intermediate stops at Questura – Ferraris – Soccorso – S. Marco. The journey from Florence to Prato takes approximately 30 minutes. To reach the rest of Tuscany, it’s best to first arrive at Santa Maria Novella station, then continue your journey by train or bus towards your chosen destination.
If you have a rental car, from Florence airport you go directly onto the A11 Florence-Sea motorway, which after a few kilometres joins the A1 Milan-Naples motorway. Heading south from the terminal exit, you instead take the Viadotto dell’Indiano (the Indian Viaduct), which gives you access to the major road Florence-Pisa-Livorno.
