The town, which is the most important centre in the Mugello, sits where the Sieve valley opens out at its widest point. The original settlement grew up around an Ubaldini manor, where the Roman settlement of Annejanum once stood. From around the mid-10th century, it came partly under the control of the Florentine bishops, against whom it rebelled in 1273; it was then proclaimed a commune.

It was a theatre of conflict between Guelphs and Ghibellines, following the fluctuating fortunes of Florence. In 1351, the town walls were constructed – of which only a few remains survive – along with two gates: Porta Fiorentina and Porta dell’orologio. In 1440, the town was besieged by Niccolò Piccinino on behalf of the Albizi; in 1527 it served as a stronghold against the French. During the Grand Duchy period, the town was modernised and improved to align with its administration.

In 1906, Galileo and Chino Chini founded the Fornaci S. Lorenzo factory, which became renowned for producing vases, cache-pots, tankards, jugs and umbrella stands in ceramics and stoneware, as well as Liberty-style majolica wall tiles and floor tiles. In 1913 it hosted the first Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition of the Mugello and Val di Sieve; the town was partially destroyed by the 1919 earthquake.

Things to do in Borgo San Lorenzo and around

Pieve di San Lorenzo

At the centre of Borgo San Lorenzo stands the Pieve di San Lorenzo, dating from 941 and the largest of the Romanesque buildings in the Florentine countryside. It was rebuilt in 1263, and the bell tower, resting on the semicircular apse and extending outwards in brick in the form of a semi-dodecagon, appears to date from this period. The wealth of artworks preserved inside bears witness to its former importance. Among these are: a Madonna attributed to Giotto, a painted wooden Crucifix from the Giottesque school, a Madonna Enthroned with Child attributed to Agnolo Gaddi, The Virgin and the Saints Francis and Dominic by Matteo Rosselli. The apse is frescoed by Galileo Chini. Beside the façade on the right is a polychrome terracotta tabernacle created by the Fornaci Chini.

Convento dei Cappuccini di San Carlo

On the road leading to Scarperia and Luco di Mugello, in a secluded position on a hillside, stands the Convento dei Cappuccini di San Carlo, dating from 1613. At the entrance to the church is a Pietà in terracotta, a work from the Fornaci Chini in Borgo San Lorenzo, while in the refectory there is an Annunciation in terracotta by Galileo Chini.

Villa Pecori Giraldi

The villa, built on the site of an ancient Giraldi property, became the property of Count Antonio Pecori in 1748, who added the Giraldi name to his own. In 1979, the Pecori Giraldi family donated the building to the Municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo.
Surrounded by extensive grounds with century-old trees and formal gardens, it offers ample free parking to the front.
