Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Florence enjoys a Mediterranean climate and can therefore be visited year-round, but don’t underestimate the summer heat! During July and August, the city consistently ranks among Italy’s hottest destinations, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40 degrees and stifling humidity. That said, Florence and the surrounding plain experience a significant temperature variation, so whilst days may be scorching, evenings are pleasantly cool, with temperatures dropping to around 20 degrees, which noticeably lowers the daily average.
If possible, avoid visiting Florence in summer. Instead, opt for late spring months such as April, May or early June, or September, when temperatures are far more pleasant, the sun shines brightly and days are long.
Florence’s weather is heavily influenced by its geographical position: the Tuscan capital sits within a basin, bordered by the Fiesole hills and Bellosguardo, and Monte Morello. This explains why, whilst summer brings oppressive humidity, winters are rather cold and damp, though snow is infrequent as temperatures rarely drop below freezing; however, sleet is often blown in by wind, particularly from Monte Morello, though accumulation is virtually negligible.
Spring brings some rain, though not excessive, and it’s rare to find many consecutive days of poor weather. Autumn too sees more frequent rainfall, concentrated specifically in October and November, which nevertheless offer pleasantly mild temperatures.
The hottest months of the year in Florence are June, July and August, when the monthly average temperature reaches 31 °C, while the coldest months of February, December and January the thermometer drops up to 3 °C.
