In the municipality of Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, you’ll find one of Tuscany’s most beloved destinations amongst visitors: the Saturnia thermal springs. The thermal spring takes its name from the village of the same name, approximately 15 kilometres north of Manciano town centre.
Once you arrive at this magical place, those seeking relaxation can spend a day in complete wellness, immersed in warm, therapeutic waters that have been prized since Etruscan and Roman times. You can choose to stay in a luxury hotel, visit one of Europe’s largest thermal parks, or make use of the free thermal springs at the Mulino Waterfall.
If you’re intrigued by this enchanting destination, which has evolved from an exclusive, niche tourism spot into an increasingly popular choice amongst visitors, you’ll find all the information you need here to spend just a day or even an entire holiday, surrounded by the beauty of the Maremma countryside, with its rolling hills, sunflower fields, vast vineyards, and centuries-old traditions.

What are commonly referred to as the Saturnia thermal springs are actually 3 distinct thermal complexes: the Saturnia Thermal Park, which is fee-paying, the Mulino Waterfall, which is free, and a splendid hotel, the Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort, which houses a thermal pool.
One of Europe’s largest, the Saturnia Thermal Park spans over 20,000 square metres and comprises five outdoor thermal pools with water at 37.5 degrees Celsius, along with a series of hydromassage facilities and hot-cold water circuits. There are also two pools dedicated to children, so the whole family can enjoy relaxation and wellness.
The park is equipped with all necessary facilities, including changing rooms, a restaurant offering breakfast and poolside aperitifs, and umbrella hire. You can also book body and facial treatments or thermal therapies at the SPA & Beauty Clinic.
Admission to Saturnia Thermal Park can be purchased online or on site. Prices vary depending on the season and day of visit. Children under 12 enter free; reductions are available for under-18s, and multi-day passes are available for 2, 3 or 7 consecutive days. For an additional fee, you can hire sun loungers, umbrellas, towelling robes, towels and flip-flops.
The park is open year-round according to the following opening hours:
Please note: A white dress code is in effect at Saturnia Thermal Park. If you don’t have white towels or robes, you can hire them on site or online.
The Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort is a luxury hotel with 124 rooms, part of the Leading Hotels of the World chain. Amongst the many services it offers, what interests thermal spring enthusiasts most is the Sorgente, a natural pool of sulphurous water that flows at 37.5 degrees Celsius. Hotel guests also enjoy free access to the adjacent Saturnia Thermal Park.
The hotel also organises various wellness programmes, such as the “Tepore termale” package, which includes mud treatments, targeted massages, inhalation therapy and medical consultation, plus unlimited access to the Sorgente and the Thermal Park.
Hotel guests are also entitled to a range of additional treatments, including hydropathic therapy, dedicated medical staff, and reserved sun loungers in the Sorgente park area.
Alongside the thermal springs, the hotel offers the Beauty Clinic, a high-level wellness centre run by specialised staff, where you can experience treatments tailored to your needs, such as aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, reflexology, Ayurveda and much more.
Alongside the fee-paying thermal facilities—the Thermal Park and the Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort—the Saturnia thermal springs complex also includes what is perhaps its most iconic feature: the Mulino Waterfall. It’s a thermal area that is completely free and open to the public 24 hours a day throughout the year, consisting of a series of small cascades that have formed numerous limestone pools over the centuries, created by the thermal stream Gorello.
The beauty of the Mulino Waterfall lies also in its idyllic setting: it’s overshadowed by an ancient stone building—an old mill. Because it’s free and one of Tuscany’s trendiest attractions, it tends to be very crowded during peak season. If you can, try to visit outside July and August: even in winter it’s worth the trip; you’ll find very few people and experience the unique sensation of bathing outdoors in 37.5-degree water whilst it’s cold outside.
It’s important to note that the Mulino Waterfall has no public toilets, changing facilities or showers. There is, however, a small bar nearby that provides these facilities. For food and drinks, you can stock up there or consider bringing everything you need from home, especially water. There’s also a free car park where you can leave your car and walk to the waterfall.

The thermal water at Saturnia follows a 40-year underground journey beneath Monte Amiata. During this time it accumulates minerals such as sulphur, calcium, sulphates and magnesium. When it emerges at the surface, with a flow of almost 800 litres per second, it reaches a constant temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius. The abundant flow allows the pools to have a complete water change every 4 hours.
The therapeutic properties of Saturnia’s thermal spring are remarkable: the water promotes skin vasodilation, reduces blood pressure, acts as an anti-inflammatory on muscles and bones, increases respiratory function, relaxes muscles, has antiseptic properties on skin, and much more.
For those who can afford it, staying at the Terme di Saturnia Natural Spa & Golf Resort is the ideal solution: you’ll have a thermal pool right at your doorstep, Thermal Park admission included, and you’ll also be close to the Mulino Waterfall. Those with a tighter budget, or simply wanting a more authentic experience, can find numerous B&Bs, apartments and farmhouses in the immediate surroundings of the springs.
If you’re looking for more services, head to Manciano, approximately 15 kilometres south of Saturnia Thermal Springs. Here you’ll find various apartments, rooms to let and B&Bs, with access to shops, supermarkets and restaurants in the town.
Getting to Saturnia Thermal Springs from Florence is not straightforward. The drive takes approximately 3 hours, passing through Grosseto first before continuing through the Maremma countryside. Paradoxically, the area is more easily reached from Rome: the distance is shorter, as is the travel time, which is around two and a half hours, including time to exit the capital and its traffic.
Saturnia’s rather isolated location means travel times are lengthy even from other Tuscan cities: Grosseto is an hour away, Siena nearly two hours, Pisa over two and a half hours.
If you want to reach Saturnia Thermal Springs by public transport, the journey can be exhausting: take the train to Albinia on the Pisa-Rome line, then catch bus 41P to Manciano, and finally bus 17P to Saturnia. The bus services are operated by Tiemme SPA.
