With a population of 27,000, Cecina is an important town in Livorno province, situated in the heart of the Etruscan Coast, between the Tuscan countryside and the sea. However, during the summer season the population multiplies, as its seaside resort Marina di Cecina is overrun with tourists and locals alike. It is indeed Marina di Cecina, officially known as Cecina Mare, that draws visitors here, who choose it not only for its beaches that receive the Blue Flag award every year, but also for its pine forest and the beautiful Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve located just south of the town centre.

Cecina and Marina di Cecina are now connected by the long Viale della Repubblica and form part of a single urban area, but at the end of the 19th century they were two separate entities. The latter expanded thanks in part to the presence of Villa Ginori, owned by Marquis Carlo Ginori who established the prestigious porcelain manufactory of the same name in Sesto Fiorentino, which remains one of Europe’s most prestigious ceramics and porcelain brands today.

Today, between Cecina and Marina di Cecina there are numerous hotels, campsites and resorts, along with many attractions for children, families and young people, such as the Acqua Village water park or the Tinì Soundgarden nightclub, plus countless bars and restaurants. Everything tailored for tourists, so you can enjoy a wonderful seaside holiday in Tuscany and perhaps take a few days to explore the marvellous hinterland.

Cecina’s beaches

Cecina has essentially three beaches to choose from. The coastline stretches north to south across the entire municipality, from the border with Rosignano Marittimo to that with Bibbona, both towns in Livorno province. From north to south you’ll encounter in order the Gorette beach, the Marina di Cecina town beach, and the Tomboli di Cecina nature park beach.

Gorette Beach

The Gorette beach is located on the northern coast of Cecina municipality, entirely between the mouth of the Cecina River and the border with Rosignano Marittimo.

It’s an extremely long and sandy beach, with a lush pine forest behind it. In many sections it’s free to access, while elsewhere you’ll find several beach clubs where you can hire sunbeds and umbrellas. The beach also has some bars and restaurants, and a surf school.

A section of Gorette beach, called Bau Beach, is dedicated to dog owners, who can let their four-legged friends run free. Gorette beach is so long and wide that even at the height of season it’s possible to find a spot of complete privacy if you’re willing to walk a few hundred metres.

You can also reach it by shuttle bus service directly from Cecina and Marina di Cecina town centre, and this may be a more convenient option than driving, as parking is prohibited along the road to the beach, Via delle Gorette. However, there is a large paying car park a few hundred metres from the sea, and a few parking spaces near the restaurants.

Marina di Cecina Beach

The stretch of coastline from the mouth of the Cecina River, where the marina is also located, to the southern end of Marina di Cecina is one long, extremely busy town beach.

It’s almost entirely occupied by beach clubs, although there are some free beach sections. The Marina di Cecina town beach is sandy, the sea is crystal clear, and it’s interspersed with a series of artificial breakwaters perpendicular to the shore, dividing it into 4 smaller beaches.

Along the beach you’ll find many bars, restaurants and hotels. The road behind it, Viale della Vittoria, represents the Marina di Cecina seafront, which is busy both during the day and after dinner.

Tomboli di Cecina Beach

3Unnamed Road, 57020, 57020 Bibbona LI, Italy

The beach south of Marina di Cecina town centre is entirely part of the Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve. It’s a 3-4 kilometre-long beach that extends to the border with Bibbona municipality, particularly with the Marina di Bibbona locality.

Being a nature reserve, it’s a completely free beach with no facilities, but in the pine forest behind there’s a cycle path, a series of picnic tables with wooden benches, and an area with exercise equipment. You can naturally walk through the pine forest too, thanks to the numerous paths and walking routes that have been created there.

Map

In the following map you can see the location of the main places of interest mentioned in this article.

Things to do in Cecina

Being a location dedicated almost exclusively to seaside tourism, there’s not much to see in Marina di Cecina. Cecina itself isn’t particularly suited to those seeking monuments and art, except for a couple of churches. More interesting to visit are the remains of the Roman villa in the San Vincenzino locality, dating from the 1st century BC, which also has a small museum displaying finds from excavations.

Speaking of museums, Cecina is home to the La Cinquantina municipal archaeological museum, in the San Pietro in Palazzi locality, dating from 1980 and set up to collect all finds from the area, from the Palaeolithic to the first millennium after Christ, attributable to the Etruscan and Roman civilisations that inhabited the region.

Also interesting is Parco Gallorose, a zoological park and working farm at the same time, where you can see over 180 animal species from around the world. The park opened in 2001, but the farm has existed since the 17th century. You can spend an unusual day admiring uncommon animals such as Nile monitor lizards, red kangaroos or birds of paradise, along with some prestigious specimens of Pisan cattle, a bovine breed on the verge of extinction.

What to do in the evening in Cecina

The undisputed star of Cecina’s nightlife is Tinì Soundgarden, a famous nightclub located north-east of the town centre, where summer sees evenings and events featuring the world’s best DJs. There are also numerous late-night venues in Marina di Cecina, especially popular with young people. There are various spots for aperitifs or happy hour, and some stay open late, especially in summer.

Some beach clubs also transform into proper beach bars as the sun sets, where you can dance until sunset and beyond, with cocktails, live music and DJ sets. Among these we mention Wimbi Beach Bar, Stella Beach and Spot 1 Beach.

For those seeking a quieter evening, perhaps couples with children or families, you can enjoy your time in Cecina and Marina di Cecina by strolling along the seafront, sitting at one of the numerous bars along the street.

Where to stay in Cecina

Needless to say, anyone looking for a seaside holiday and relaxation should find accommodation in Marina di Cecina, to be very close to the beach and forget about the car. The choice is very wide, with no shortage of hotels and residences for all budgets, plus a wide range of apartments to rent. We advise booking well in advance directly online to avoid your chosen property being fully booked.

The obvious advantage of staying in Marina di Cecina is the proximity to the sea: on the other hand, in summer it’s very crowded, and in the evening, as you’d expect, young people are out enjoying themselves. Therefore, if you’re seeking peace and a good night’s sleep, head to the town of Cecina, where you’ll certainly find a quieter spot, perhaps a hotel on a side street.

Alongside the two pine forests north and south of Marina di Cecina there are also some campsites and holiday villages, fully equipped, ideal for those seeking a swimming pool, entertainment and all facilities.

How to get to Cecina

Cecina is located near the exit of the same name on the SS1 Aurelia state road, and is therefore very convenient to reach. From Florence, for example, the 130 kilometres separating them can be covered in just over an hour and a half, following the FI-PI-LI major road to the Vicarello exit, from which you join the A12 motorway heading south all the way to the Rosignano Marittimo toll barrier. From here, the road continues as the SS1, which you follow to the Cecina exit, just a few minutes from the town.

From coastal Tuscan towns such as Pisa and Livorno, Cecina and Marina di Cecina can be reached in just over 45 minutes, again using the Aurelia heading south. From Grosseto you instead drive north; in this case the distance is over 100 kilometres and takes about an hour and 10 minutes. Finally, from Arezzo and Siena the distances are more considerable, about 2 hours and 15 minutes from the former and 1 hour and 40 minutes from the latter. In both cases, you travel through the Tuscan hinterland using the regional road network.

Cecina also has a railway station, located on the Tirrenica railway line connecting Pisa to Rome, and is therefore convenient to reach by train. The journey from Florence Santa Maria Novella, for example, takes about 2 hours, and there are also direct train options. Depending on the timetable, it might be more convenient to change at Pisa Centrale or Livorno Centrale.

Once you arrive at the station, you’ll find yourself at the southern edge of Piazza Gramsci, and walking across it you’ll be practically in Cecina town centre. If your final destination is Marina di Cecina or one of its beaches, after getting off the train you’ll need to take bus number 1, which runs along the entire Viale della Repubblica and reaches the sea in just over 10 minutes.
