The Elba Island Airport (IATA code: EBA, ICAO: LIRJ) is the small airfield that allows you to reach the largest of the Tuscan islands directly by air, avoiding the ferry from Piombino. Located in La Pila, in the municipality of Campo nell’Elba, on the island’s southern side, it sits roughly 2 km from Marina di Campo town centre and about twenty kilometres from Portoferraio, the main town. The facility is operated by Alatoscana S.p.A. and features an asphalt runway of 1,197 metres, a size that restricts access to small aircraft but doesn’t prevent reliable year-round service.
Territorial continuity flights, guaranteed through an agreement with ENAC, connect the airfield with major Tuscan airports throughout the year and with Milan during the summer season. From 2025, SmallFly, a Maltese airline, has taken over route operations following Silver Air’s cessation of flights in October 2023. These are complemented by seasonal flights from central Europe, operated by German and Swiss carriers in partnership with tour operators specialising in Elba.
The airport’s position — just 2 km from Marina di Campo and well connected to the main road network — makes it fairly straightforward to reach any point on the island once you’ve landed.
About 300 metres from the terminal you’ll find the coach station operated by Autolinee Toscane. Active routes cover connections to Marina di Campo and Portoferraio, with connections available for other island locations. It’s the most economical option for light travellers in no rush, though services aren’t particularly frequent — it’s worth checking timetables in advance on the Autolinee Toscane website.
Taxi and private hire car services are available immediately outside the terminal. This is the most convenient choice for those with large luggage or staying in areas not served by buses, of which there are many on Elba given the island’s layout. For locations further from the airport — such as Marciana Marina, Capoliveri or Rio nell’Elba — taxi or private hire remain the most practical options.
Car hire is available outside the terminal. Having your own car on Elba makes a significant difference: the scenic roads crossing the island rank among Tuscany’s finest, and many beaches and attractions aren’t accessible by public transport. In high season, it’s highly advisable to book your vehicle in advance, as availability runs out quickly, particularly over weekends in July and August.
To rent a car in Elba Island we always recommend comparing the rates of all companies with DiscoverCars because in our opinion it offers the best prices, allows cancellation up to 48 hours before rental and offers a very cheap comprehensive insurance policy.
For those arriving with no luggage or just a light carry-on, Marina di Campo town centre is reachable on foot in under 25 minutes, covering the 2 km separating the airport from the town. It’s not recommended during summer’s hottest hours, but on spring or autumn mornings it’s a pleasant walk that immediately immerses you in the island’s unhurried pace.
