Marina di Bibbona is a coastal resort in the province of Livorno on Tuscany’s coastline, situated in the stretch known as the Etruscan Coast. It’s a small, peaceful hamlet for much of the year, but comes alive in summer with holidaymakers arriving to enjoy a splendid beach backed by an equally attractive pine forest, excellent family facilities, holiday villages, campsites and everything needed for a relaxing, stress-free break.
But there’s more than just the seaside: inland from Marina di Bibbona, across the hills, lies an important wine-producing region. This is where world-renowned wines are made, such as Bolgheri DOC, with its variations including the celebrated Sassicaia, as well as other prestigious vintages like Ornellaia and Guado al Tasso.
Marina di Bibbona’s beach is exceptionally long, stretching several kilometres from its northern boundary with Cecina – particularly the Tomboli nature reserve – to its southern edge near Castagneto Carducci.
Behind the beach lies an extensive pine forest, ideal for escaping the summer heat. The beach itself is sandy, though there are sections with stones and pebbles. Given its considerable length, it’s easy to find a secluded spot even in peak season. However, near the town centre, the beach becomes equipped with beach clubs where you can hire loungers and parasols.
Around Marina di Bibbona’s centre, the beach has several bars and basic facilities, including lifeguard services, hot and cold showers, and canoe rentals. There’s a pay car park near Marina di Bibbona’s fort, though it’s not particularly spacious and becomes nearly impossible to access during high season.
A larger car park is located at the southern end of the town, not far from the Fossa Camilla which marks the boundary between Marina di Bibbona and Castagneto Carducci. However, this car park is considerably further from the beach – roughly 500 metres – though the walk is easy enough, following a flat pathway through shaded pine forest.
South of the Fossa Camilla, a section of Marina di Bibbona’s beach is designated for naturists, though it’s not exclusively reserved for them.
Marina di Bibbona is a small beach resort built primarily for holiday visitors, so there’s little of cultural interest in the traditional sense. Nearby, however, the village of Bolgheri is well worth a visit. A hamlet within Castagneto Carducci and famous for its wines, it’s reached via the striking Viale dei Cipressi (Cypress Avenue), which leads to the village with its quintessentially Tuscan character.
For wine enthusiasts, the MUSEM, Bolgheri’s wine museum, is worth a visit, whilst to the north lies the beautiful Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve, covering 465 hectares. Beyond the beach, there are walking and cycling trails through woodland and pine forest, plus picnic areas and benches for resting.
Despite its small size, Marina di Bibbona becomes quite lively in summer. Much of its nightlife takes place within the numerous campsites, but around town you’ll find the Bamboo Enjoy Bar, popular particularly with younger visitors.
There are also bars, restaurants and aperitivo spots dotted about, whilst families with children should head to Bibbolandia playground, conveniently situated in the centre – perfect for evening entertainment and relaxing strolls.
Marina di Bibbona offers numerous hotels, residences and holiday apartments. All are reasonably close to the sea, reached on foot through the pine forest. If you’ve decided to spend your holiday here, we strongly recommend booking well in advance online, to avoid disappointment if your preferred accommodation is full. Bear in mind that staying in the centre during summer means dealing with considerable noise and commotion, and parking will be difficult unless your hotel has its own car park.
If you prefer peace and quiet with a more authentic Tuscan atmosphere, head inland: the landscape changes dramatically and within a few kilometres you’ll find yourself in open countryside, spoilt for choice with farmhouses, country inns and rural homes. You can sleep surrounded by nature in complete peace and silence, waking to a generous breakfast of local produce, often sourced from just down the road.
We offer a selection of hotels at Marina di Bibbona to suit all categories of travellers. The most booked by tourists are the sea-facing hotels, often right on the beach.
