White Beaches

The White Beaches of Rosignano Marittimo strike visitors with their pristine white sand and turquoise waters, a legacy of the industrial discharge from the Solvay plant that has been operating since 1914.

The White Beaches of Rosignano Marittimo are among the most talked-about and photographed stretches of coastline in all of Tuscany: approximately five kilometres of brilliant white, fine sand, with sea that shifts from turquoise to deep blue so sharply that it’s visually reminiscent of certain tropical shores. They’re located along the Etruscan Coast, in the hamlet of Rosignano Solvay, between Castiglioncello to the north and Vada to the south, and it’s impossible to visit them without encountering the vast industrial plant that created them.

The white colour of the sand, in fact, is not nature’s work: it’s the direct consequence of calcium carbonate discharge produced by the Solvay plant, Europe’s largest soda facility, which has been operating since 1914 behind the beach. The chalky residue from sodium carbonate processing, released into the sea through a channel called the Fosso Bianco, has gradually deposited a brilliant white layer that transformed the coast from an ordinary Tyrrhenian beach into a landscape with an exotic appearance. Regional authorities (ARPAT) regularly monitor water quality and declare it compliant with bathing standards along most of the shoreline, with the exception of the stretch directly adjacent to the outfall, where bathing is prohibited and marked by appropriate signage.

Visiting the White Beaches means confronting this contradiction head-on: the beauty of the landscape is genuine, the sandy seabed is shallow and suitable for those who can’t swim, and the beach is well-equipped with beach clubs and largely free access. But the plant is there, clearly visible when you turn your back to the sea, and the debate over whether industrial production is compatible with the tourism aspirations of this stretch of coast has been ongoing for decades. Those who choose to come here do so knowing what they’ll find: an unusual visual spectacle, authentic in its strangeness, unlike anywhere else in Tuscany.

Getting to the White Beaches

The White Beaches are reached by car via the Via Aurelia SS1 heading south from Livorno, or by exiting the A12 motorway at Rosignano. From the roundabout at the entrance to Rosignano Solvay, follow signs for the sea: the beach is reachable in just a few minutes. The main car park is located near the Lillatro beach club and fills up quickly on July and August mornings. It’s advisable to arrive by 9am to find a space, or aim for the slightly more distant car parks along the coastal road.

By train, Rosignano station is located at Rosignano Solvay and is served by regional trains on the Livorno–Grosseto line, with connections from Livorno (around 20 minutes), Pisa (around 40 minutes) and Florence Santa Maria Novella (around 90 minutes direct). From the station, the beach is reachable on foot in 15–20 minutes or by short taxi ride. In summer, some local bus services connect the station to the seafront.

Those arriving from Pisa Airport can take a direct train to Rosignano (around 50 minutes with a change at Livorno) or hire a car at the airport and drive around 60 km along the Aurelia or A12. By bicycle, the White Beaches are connected to Vada and Castiglioncello by cycle paths that follow the coast, also suitable for children during the summer season.

Where to stay near the White Beaches

The best choice for those who want the White Beaches within easy reach is to stay in Rosignano Solvay, in the hamlet directly overlooking the white shoreline. The accommodation offer consists mainly of apartments and holiday homes, ideal for stays of several days. There are no hotels in the heart of the hamlet, but the proximity to the beaches and seafront makes up for the lack of formal hotel services.

A few kilometres to the north, Castiglioncello is the most elegant and well-equipped resort in the municipality, with a seaside tradition dating back to the early twentieth century — it was frequented by Macchiaioli painters and intellectuals — and accommodation options ranging from various categories of hotels to residences and beachfront apartments. To the south, Vada is a small, peaceful resort with some beachfront structures, a welcoming atmosphere and its own sandy beaches, highly appreciated by families with children for their shallow, safe waters.
