There are countless attractions not to be missed within the province of Lucca. The territory stretches from sea to mountain, passing through unspoilt valleys and mysterious caves.
Without doubt, the most touristy area of Lucca province is the Versilia, a coastal stretch encompassing some of Italy’s most sought-after holiday destinations, including the exclusive Forte dei Marmi, followed by Marina di Pietrasanta, Lido di Camaiore and Viareggio, where one of Italy’s most important Carnival processions takes place.
Leaving the Lucca coast behind, it’s time to discover some of the natural wonders the province has to offer: don’t miss the stunning Grotta del Vento, and nearby Antro del Corchia, where you can admire stalactites and stalagmites in truly magical surroundings. Then venture through the narrow gorges of the Orrido di Botri, and be sure not to skip the beautiful Orecchiella park.
Much of the inland area of Lucca province falls within the historic region of Garfagnana, waiting to be explored. Start at Bagni di Lucca, then follow the Serchio river northwards, discovering the villages of Barga, Coreglia Antelminelli, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and Camporgiano.
Finally, don’t leave Lucca province without visiting the small village of Sant’Anna di Stazzema, to pay respects to the massacre carried out by Nazi-Fascist troops during the Second World War, when hundreds of refugees were killed in a single day.
