Nestled between Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, the northern wedge of Tuscany is represented by the province of Massa-Carrara.

After visiting the two main towns, namely Massa and Carrara, venture into this territory beyond the main tourist circuits, though it’s sure to deliver incredible surprises. Begin with a visit to Carrara’s marble quarries, the prized material for which Tuscany is renowned worldwide, then explore on foot the numerous trails that crisscross the Apuan Alps, ranging in length and difficulty.

Press on past the town of Aulla, and you’ll find yourself in the enchanting territory of Lunigiana, the ancient land of the Luni, which still reveals beauty at every turn. Visit, for example, Pontremoli and Licciana Nardi, but do stop along the way to admire the natural beauty of the area.

Finally, during the summer months, enjoy a few days at the seaside lounging on the beaches of Marina di Massa and Marina di Carrara, which are particularly popular with locals.
