Cinquale is a peaceful seaside resort in Versilia, a hamlet within the municipality of Montignoso in the province of Massa-Carrara. Situated between Marina di Massa and Forte dei Marmi, it offers a more serene and less crowded alternative to the renowned nearby beaches, whilst maintaining all the facilities of a modern seaside resort.
The coastline stretches for roughly a kilometre, divided in two by the mouth of the Cinquale stream. The location boasts a small marina with eighty berths, the celebrated Versilia Thermal Baths with saline thermal waters and modern beach clubs. Its strategic position allows you to enjoy the tranquillity of a seaside village whilst being within easy reach of Versilia’s vibrant nightlife.
Cinquale’s beach features fine golden sand with gently shelving seabeds, ideal for families with children. The shoreline forms one continuous stretch with the beaches of Marina di Massa to the north and Forte dei Marmi to the south, characteristic of the Riviera Apuana.
The central seafront is lined with modern and well-equipped beach clubs offering bars, restaurants and full facilities. The renowned Beach Club Versilia provides not only beach loungers, but also a private pool, a seafront gym, a wellness area with sauna and the Oceans restaurant serving quality lunches and dinners. In the evenings, the club transforms into one of the area’s most popular nightclubs.
The Green Beach is a free and inclusive space, equipped with accessible facilities for people with disabilities or mobility difficulties. The small marina, dominated by the lighthouse beside the stream mouth, accommodates boats up to sixteen metres in length, with around eighty permanent berths and mooring spaces for passing small craft.
On the southern border with Forte dei Marmi lies the WWF Oasis, a protected area of approximately three hectares that preserves the only intact stretch of coastal dune north of Viareggio. This preserved natural area extends for five hundred linear metres and hosts a small botanical garden established by Bologna University in the nineteen-seventies.
The vegetation includes rare species such as the golden rod and sea cornflower, endemic to the upper Tuscan coast, alongside sea lilies, curry plant and marram grass. In winter the area welcomes birds such as the Great Crested Grebe, Common Black-headed Gull and rare species like the Red-breasted Merganser. This natural free beach offers clean waters and an authentic view of Versilia as it once was.
The Versilia Thermal Baths, just fifty metres from the beach, stand within a thermal park where the Undulna Spring rises. The saline thermal water, drawn from a ninety-metre-deep well, is particularly rich in mineral salts and is used for thalassotherapy treatments, Turkish baths, hydrotherapy and peat applications. The centre also offers a thermal pool, Kneipp trail, sauna and aesthetic medicine treatments, perfect for those seeking relaxation and wellness.
The Church of San Giuseppe Artigiano is one of the centre’s most distinctive buildings. The seafront promenade forms the heart of Cinquale’s social life, with beach clubs and restaurants such as Amici dell’Universo, Riva Bistrot and Il Trabucco. In summer a fun fair sets up in town, whilst exhibitions, concerts and shows enliven the evenings. On 17 August the traditional Festa di San Rocchino takes place, featuring market stalls, music, food and fireworks at 22:30 to mark the end of summer.
In Cinquale you’ll find mainly family-run hotels and guesthouses, many just a short walk from the beach with pools and full facilities. The resort also offers apartments and holiday homes for longer, more independent stays. Some properties have agreements with nearby beach clubs.
In the hillside hamlets of Montignoso there are farmhouses and bed & breakfasts nestled among the greenery of the Apuan Alps, ideal for those seeking peace away from the coast. Proximity to Forte dei Marmi and Marina di Massa greatly expands the accommodation options, with luxury hotels, campsites and holiday villages within a few minutes’ drive.
