Along the Apuan coast, the shoreline of the entire province of Massa-Carrara and part of the Ligurian province of La Spezia, one of the most popular and pleasant seaside resorts is Marina di Carrara. Part of the municipality of Carrara, it represents a renowned holiday destination, especially in summer, when its 15,000 permanent residents are joined by several thousand tourists from other parts of Tuscany and Italy, who venture here to enjoy a beautiful sandy beach and the magnificent backdrop of the Apuan Alps.

Bordering Liguria to the west with the town of Sarzana, it sits right at the north-western tip of Tuscany, and is characterised by an expansive sandy beach, almost entirely equipped with sunbed and parasol hire, managed by private beach clubs. Behind it stretches a spacious pinewood, which provides shelter from the sun during hot summer days.

Marina di Carrara is also an excellent base for visiting the splendid marble quarries of Carrara, thanks to which the entire area is renowned worldwide. It’s merely a few minutes’ drive from Carrara, from which you then ascend to the quarries along narrow roads that wind their way up through the Apuan Alps.

Marina di Carrara Beach

The beach at Marina di Carrara is located to the west of the port and extends to the Parmignola stream, which marks the border between Tuscany and Liguria, specifically from the hamlet of Marinella di Sarzana in La Spezia province. The beach is well-organised, almost entirely equipped and boasts all modern amenities.

The beach clubs, in fact, offer sunbeds and parasols, as well as access to changing rooms, cabins, showers and bars and restaurants. There is also a lifeguard service and the option to hire rowing boats or pedaloes.

The beach is entirely sandy, with fine golden sand, as is the seabed, which slopes gradually.

Free Beaches at Marina di Carrara

There are 4 free beaches at Marina di Carrara: the main one is called Fossa Maestra, and is the largest and most important. Located roughly midway along the shoreline, next to the Paradise Beach bathhouse, it spans about 50 metres wide and nearly 200 metres long. During summer it becomes very crowded, as it’s the only free stretch of beach, but given its size it’s still possible to find a spot to lay your towel or pitch your umbrella.

The second free beach at Marina di Carrara is called Bau Beach, and is located very close to the Ligurian border, directly behind Camping Carrara. As the name suggests, it’s a dog beach, although it isn’t equipped with dog showers or water fountains. Be aware that swimming is prohibited, as the streams that border it are wastewater.

There’s also a small stretch of free beach, called La Rotonda, which lies behind Piazza Paradiso, next to the Morgana bathhouse. Finally, the last section of free beach at Marina di Carrara is located next to the port, lined by the Sandro Pertini promenade.

What to See in Marina di Carrara

Certainly the main attraction of Marina di Carrara is its long golden beach, but if you fancy a break from seaside life, do visit the town centre. There are no breath-taking monuments, but certain areas are worth seeing: Piazza Menconi is a good example, overlooked by the beautiful Church of the Holy Family, dating from 1886, or the Oratory of Christ on the Cross, which features as a stop on the Via Crucis procession held in the city every Good Friday.

What to Do in the Evening at Marina di Carrara

Marina di Carrara is a small town that, given its size, is well served when it comes to nightlife. There are many bars and restaurants, pubs for after dinner, aperitivo venues and several places where you can stay late into the night. Recently, the social scene has also moved to the beachfront, where some beach clubs transform into beach clubs, with music from sunset onwards.

Among the notable names in Marina di Carrara’s nightlife are Rebel and New Beach Club, whilst in nearby Avenza there’s a rather famous nightclub, Swamp Club.

Where to Stay in Marina di Carrara

Marina di Carrara has numerous hotels in various categories, which in recent years have been joined by several bed and breakfasts and apartments run by private owners.

We recommend staying close to the beach, so you can forget about your car for your entire stay and get around on foot between the sea and the town centre. However, be aware that this area isn’t always quiet, particularly at weekends or during high season; so if you’re looking for a peaceful place to rest, head inland, where accommodation is generally more affordable.

How to Get to Marina di Carrara

Its location at the north-western tip of Tuscany means Marina di Carrara is never particularly easy to reach. However, the presence of the nearby Carrara motorway exit, a junction on the A12 motorway Genova-Rosignano Marittimo, means journey times from the rest of the region are never excessive.

For example, from Florence it takes around an hour and a half, travelling along the A11 motorway to Viareggio and then joining the A12 to Carrara. From the motorway exit to the centre of Marina di Carrara is just 3 kilometres, covering the distance in about 6-7 minutes along Viale Galileo Galilei.

Those arriving at Marina di Carrara from the Tuscan coast will take considerably less time: from the centre of Pisa it takes just 40 minutes, from Livorno around 45 minutes.

Finally, those opting to travel by public transport can rely on a combination of trains and buses. Trains run to Carrara-Avenza station, situated on the Pisa-La Spezia-Genoa line. Once you’ve disembarked, continue to Marina di Carrara by public bus number 52, which gets you there in about 10 minutes.
