Much of the province of Pistoia falls within the Montagna Pistoiese, an extensive area comprised primarily of small villages where many Tuscans head both summer and winter for leisurely walks or skiing. The most famous destination here is undoubtedly Abetone, which with its 50 km of slopes represents Tuscany’s most significant ski resort.
Beyond the Montagna Pistoiese, much of Pistoia province is relatively flat, stretching between Florence and Lucca. Among the most worthwhile destinations to visit—all conveniently close to one another—we’d recommend Buggiano, Uzzano, Pescia and Collodi, a hamlet of Pescia famous for providing the pen name to Carlo Lorenzini, the celebrated author who wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio.
Also worth noting is the charming Montecatini Terme, with its thermal spas and prestigious hotels, still drawing an exclusive clientele today. From the centre of Montecatini Terme, you can visit the ancient village of Montecatini Alto via a scenic funicular railway that winds its way up the hillside.
