Located in the heart of Tuscany, Florence enjoys a Mediterranean climate and can therefore be visited all year round, but don’t underestimate the summer heat! During the months of July and August, in fact, it constantly tops the list of Italy’s hottest cities, with temperatures very often exceeding 40 degrees and suffocating mugginess. It must be said, however, that the temperature range of Florence and the whole of the Florentine plain is considerable, so even if the day is torrid, the nights are pleasant, with temperatures dropping to around 20 degrees anyway, thus significantly lowering the average daily temperature.
If possible, therefore, avoid coming to Florence in summer. Instead, prefer the months of late spring, such as April, May or the beginning of June, or even September, when the temperatures are decidedly more affordable, the sun shines high in the sky and the days are long.
The weather in Florence is heavily influenced by its geographical position: the Tuscan capital is in fact in the centre of a basin, bordered by the hills of Fiesole and Bellosguardo, and by Monte Morello. This is why, while summers are sultry, winters are rather cold and wet, although snow is not frequent as temperatures rarely drop below zero; there is often windblown sleet, especially from Monte Morello, although the accumulations are almost nil.
Spring brings with it some rain, although not excessive, and it is rare to find several days of bad weather in a row. Even in the autumn , rainfall is more frequent, concentrated specifically in October and November, which, however, still have decidedly pleasant temperatures on their side.
The hottest months of the year in Weather Florence are June, July and August, when the monthly average temperature reaches 31 °C, while the coldest months of February, December and January the thermometer drops up to 3 °C.
