Rapolano Terme, nestled in the heart of Tuscany in the province of Siena, is an important thermal spa destination: visitors can choose between two spa facilities here, Terme Antica Querciolaia, located close to the town centre, and Terme San Giovanni, further from the residential area, set amongst the Sienese hills.
The town is home to just 5,000 residents, yet boasts excellent tourist facilities, thanks to the presence of the two spa establishments. Moreover, Rapolano Terme makes an excellent base for exploring the Crete Senesi region, the Val d’Orcia, Chianti to the north and the whole of Siena province.
We are indeed in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, amongst gently rolling hills and endless rows of vines, which represent the most iconic stereotype of the region. Visit Rapolano and its surroundings, relax at the thermal spas and then enjoy a tour through the vineyards, perhaps sipping an excellent wine. You’ll fall in love with this land at first sight, and you’ll wish your holiday would never end.
As mentioned, Rapolano Terme has two spa establishments: Terme San Giovanni and Terme Antica Querciolaia.
Located approximately 2 kilometres south-west of Rapolano’s centre, nestled in the heart of the Crete Senesi, Terme San Giovanni is part of a splendid resort with 58 rooms. It features a thermal pool park, a thermal wellness centre and offers additional services such as a restaurant and relaxation area. Of course, classical beauty treatments for face and body are also available, as well as numerous types of massage.
The resort also boasts a wonderful park spanning 20 hectares, where you’ll find trees such as plane trees, maples and poplars, as well as aromatic shrubs like rosemary, lavender and heritage roses.
The thermal waters of Terme San Giovanni have been recognised by the Ministry of Health as therapeutic for respiratory and muscular disorders. They flow naturally from the spring at a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius and are composed of sulphur and calcium bicarbonate.
Terme San Giovanni offers its guests inhalation therapies, recommended for pharyngolaryngitis, tracheitis, bronchial asthma, sinusitis or chronic bronchitis, and mud-bath therapies, that is, mud and bath treatments indicated for osteoarthritis, rheumatism, cervical and lumbar pain.
Speaking of mud, at Terme San Giovanni you can undergo thermal mud treatments, obtained by allowing ventilated clay to mature in flowing sulphurous thermal water for at least six months: in this way, the clay absorbs the minerals and releases them once it comes into contact with the body.
Terme Antica Querciolaia, located in the town centre at via Trieste 22, is the other thermal spa facility in Rapolano. It is famous for having been mentioned by Garibaldi, who treated the aftermath of his Aspromonte wound here. Almost two centuries later, the establishment has kept pace with the times and today is modern and state-of-the-art, the ideal place to spend a day dedicated to relaxation and wellness.
Guests have access to therapeutic thermal pools with cold (22-25 degrees), warm (30-34 degrees) and hot (39-40 degrees) baths, available depending on the season and the thermal treatment chosen.
At Terme Antica Querciolaia you’ll also find body treatments that relax, regenerate and detoxify the body, including thermal relaxation bath with clay salts, detoxifying mud sauna and regenerating body thermal mud at 47 degrees. The facility also offers thermal synergy massage therapies, including holistic massages, four-handed treatments, lymphatic drainage and physiotherapy massages.
Additionally, the establishment provides services under NHS agreement, to treat and prevent chronic respiratory disorders, ear, nose and throat diseases and osteoarticular diseases.
The main attraction of Rapolano Terme is certainly its thermal spa facilities. But if you’d like to do something different, after spending a few hours in the charming historic town centre, dedicate yourself to exploring the magnificent surroundings. We are indeed in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, in an area that the whole world envies. Hire a car and set off without a destination: with every bend you’ll discover breathtaking views, made up of rolling hillsides, vineyards, cypress avenues and everything you find on Tuscan postcards that have made the region famous worldwide.
Moreover, you’re in a privileged position to visit Chianti and Val d’Orcia, two of the areas you shouldn’t miss during a Tuscan holiday.
Back in town, don’t miss the Parco Dell'acqua3, located near Terme Antica Querciolaia: it’s dedicated to travertine, formed from thermal water deposits, and features various sculptures. For those who love traditions, in the Serre di Rapolano area you’ll find the Museo dell'Antica Grancia e dell'Olio4, which showcases an ancient grain store completely restored, as well as machinery and scenes of daily life from past centuries.
In the following map you can see the location of the main places of interest mentioned in this article.
In the evening, Rapolano Terme is certainly not like Miami or New York! It’s a small town of 5,000 residents, and tourism is mostly spa-oriented, so you won’t find nightclubs or discos. Just time for a stroll through the centre, a drink at a bar, and back to your hotel. If you’re looking for nightlife, head to other areas of Tuscany.
For those visiting Rapolano Terme for its thermal spa facilities, we recommend staying nearby, so you can make the most of your day. Near Terme San Giovanni there are two hotels, one within the facility and one just outside. Bear in mind that this establishment is located a couple of kilometres outside the town centre, in the heart of the countryside, so booking a hotel here is highly recommended for those seeking maximum peace and quiet, but conversely you’ll need to drive to reach the centre, even just to find a bar or shop.
The other thermal spa facility in Rapolano Terme, Antica Querciolaia, is practically in the town centre, and is therefore surrounded by numerous services. There are also numerous hotels and B&Bs here where you can stay, almost all spa-themed.
If instead you want to enjoy a Tuscan holiday and use the spas only occasionally, keep in mind that in the area surrounding Rapolano Terme there are many farm stays, scattered throughout the municipal territory, where you can enjoy complete relaxation in contact with nature, and savour locally-sourced meals at breakfast and dinner with zero food miles.
Rapolano Terme is located in a rather out-of-the-way position relative to the main transport routes, so although distances from Tuscany’s main cities are never excessive, journey times are always quite long.
This is the case with Florence, which is less than 100 kilometres away but takes between an hour and a half and two hours to reach, depending on whether you choose to pass via the Florence-Siena link road and then continue on the SS715, or via the A1 motorway until the Valdarno exit and then continue along the SS715 through Castelnuovo Berardenga.
From the Tuscan coast, Rapolano Terme is more than two hours away from both Pisa and Livorno; from both cities you reach it by taking the SGC FI-PI-LI until the Empoli exit and then continuing via the SR429 through Castelfiorentino and Certaldo, joining the Florence-Siena motorway link at the Poggibonsi North junction.
Those wishing to reach Rapolano Terme from Siena and Arezzo can consider themselves fortunate: it takes half an hour from Siena, and around 45 minutes from Arezzo.
Finally, reaching Rapolano Terme by public transport can be time-consuming, but is certainly feasible: from Arezzo railway station, regional bus line 138 departs, operated by Tiemme SPA, which reaches Rapolano in approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, from Florence you first take a bus or train to Siena, and then continue by bus on line 107, also operated by Tiemme SPA.
Rapolano Terme also has a railway station, served by regional trains on lines to and from Siena, Empoli and Chiusi-Chianciano Terme. There are no direct trains from Florence; the quickest route involves changing at Siena and takes between 2 and a half and 3 hours.
