Not everyone knows it, but the Tuscan countryside is dotted with tiny medieval villages, often built around a castle. Until a few decades ago, many of these enchanting places were sadly left to decay and bore the inevitable marks of time, but in recent years a massive restoration campaign has been launched, allowing these wonderful buildings to regain their former glory.
But that’s not all: many of them have been converted into hotels, boutique properties, bed and breakfasts, resorts and farmhouse inns. Staying in a castle in Tuscany allows you to experience a timeless holiday surrounded by magical atmospheres, yet at the same time enjoy every comfort at your fingertips: yes, because many are equipped with a swimming pool, restaurant, and rooms suited to twenty-first-century tourists, complete with TV, air conditioning and Wi-Fi connection.

We start our roundup with Castello Di Meleto Wine Destination, located in Gaiole in Chianti, in the Meleto area. It sits in a fairytale location, an ancient castle perched on a hilltop, alongside historic stables now naturally converted into communal spaces and apartments. There’s also a splendid infinity pool with views over the surrounding hills, and a beautiful olive grove, plus a magnificent Italian-style garden with flowerbeds and neatly trimmed hedges, impeccably maintained.
The rooms at Castello Di Meleto are furnished in typical Tuscan Renaissance style, with tall beds and imposing headboards, and wooden beam ceilings. You can clearly see the restoration work, though – the rooms don’t feel “old” at all, but are meticulously detailed and suited to modern times.
You can also stay in one of the property’s apartments, which feature a kitchenette and come with one, two or three bedrooms. Within the grounds there’s also an entire villa of 65 square metres and 2 bathrooms, accommodating up to six guests.
Let’s move to the Arezzo countryside, in the Valenzano area. Here you’ll find Castello di Valenzano, a charming property that certainly makes an impression. Its crenellations are reminiscent of fairytale castles, and the grand park surrounding it reinforces this idea even further. The interiors are truly magnificent, with enormous chandeliers and frescoed ceilings: a step back in time, but with all today’s comforts.
Entering a guest room, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into the Middle Ages, thanks to the original terracotta floors, ceilings with large exposed wooden beams, and elegant four-poster beds. The furnishings are wooden, and the walls feature frescoes, mirrors and beautiful paintings.

In the Casetta area, not far from Asciano, in the province of Siena, you’ll find Castello di Leonina, a wonderful property nestled in the heart of the Crete Senesi, where relaxation is the watchword. This ancient castle with its attached small village has been converted into a charming hotel where you can relive bygone days.
The swimming pool is particularly lovely, overlooking open countryside, and the restaurant deserves special mention, serving refined dishes of local inspiration. Back in the municipality of Gaiole in Chianti, this time in the Tornano area. Here you’ll find Castello di Tornano, completely restored and converted into a hotel with a swimming pool. We’re in the heart of Chianti Classico, and the atmosphere is exactly what you’d expect from Tuscany.
The setting is very peaceful, ideal for relaxation. You can also dine at the property, with the in-house restaurant offering Tuscan and Italian specialities. Completing the picture is a lovely pool set within the gardens, a tennis court and the option of relaxing massages.
The rooms at Castello di Tornano are furnished in classical style, with rich fabrics, beam ceilings and terracotta floors. There are also some period furnishings, but the comforts are those of the twenty-first century, including Wi-Fi connection, DVD and children’s music, board games and themed dinner evenings. At San Casciano Val di Pesa, south of Florence province, Castello di Bibbione stands proudly, a property completely immersed in nature and relaxation. You can stay in the main building or in small detached cottages, each completely independent and featuring its own garden and relaxation area. Still in Val di Pesa, this time near Mercatale, you’ll find Castello di Gabbiano. It’s a hotel situated within an elegant castle dating from the 1300s, surrounded by an enormous 100-hectare estate with vineyards and olive groves, which can be explored far and wide as trekking trails have been created for walking or cycling. The swimming pool is also lovely, for those who want to be in the open air but prefer not to walk.

In the Gargonza area, in the Arezzo locality of Monte San Savino, you’ll find Castello di Gargonza. We’re halfway between Arezzo and Siena, on top of a hill: Castello di Gargonza is actually a characterful private Tuscan village, whose heart is the castle itself, surrounded by 500 hectares of woodland.
